Winners Announced for Third Annual Student Art Exhibition

March 1, 2010

EAST LANSING ----- Michigan State University Federal Credit Union announced the winners of the Third Annual Student Art Exhibition and honored all who competed on Sunday, February 28.

"The talent reflected by this year's entrants was astonishing," said April Clobes, MSUFCU's vice president of marketing and e-commerce. "It's hard to believe these pieces of art were created by high school students." The Exhibition included two segments of awards for the student artists: the Juried Awards were determined by a panel of three local art experts. The People's Choice Awards were determined by votes from the public cast both in person at the MSUFCU headquarters and online at the Exhibition's Web site, www.msufcuart.com.

The first place winner for the Juried Awards was Taylor Wilson, an 18-year-old senior at Waverly High School. Her painting, "Untitled," was a portrait of her favorite guitarist, Aoi, from the Japanese rock band the Gazette. Following her graduation, Taylor plans to go to college to be a Japanese translator.

Second place was awarded to Tom Jost of East Lansing High School. Third place went to Crimson Cook of Grand Ledge High School. Honorable Mentions were: Jennifer Abbott, Mason High School; Breanna Earls, Grand Ledge High School; Angela Gonzalez, Holt High School; Sarah Morse, Holt High School; Emma Cheatham, Haslett High School; Steven Fulton, Williamston High School; Katie McAllister, Waverly High School; Colin Piper, Mason High School; Kristen Choi, Haslett High School; and Jona Rahar, Waverly High School.

The People's Choice Award first place winner was 16-year-old Ke'Mone Casey, a junior at Everett High School. His painting, "Ourland," was inspired by "the history of our great nation," he said. After high school, Ke'Mone plans to put his talent to use by finding a career in the arts. Haslett High School student Kristin Choi won second place and Mackenzie Robson of Mason High School came in third.

First place winners won $300, second place $200 and third place $100; honorable mentions received $25 each.

In addition to the individual awards for the students' work, the School Spirit Award was announced. The School Spirit Award is given each year to honor the school who has the most representatives cast votes in the Exhibition each year. This year, the award went to East Lansing High School.

The Exhibition featured the artwork of high school students from all over Greater Lansing from February 2 to 27. To learn more about all of this year’s Exhibition winners and to view the artwork, visit www.msufcuart.com.
