Revitalization Begins with a Nod to Lansing's History
Pieces of Old City Market will be Reused and Recycled as Building is Demolished Today to Build Marketplace
April 14, 2010
Lansing ----- In remembrance of the much loved "old" City Market, elements of the building's structure will be incorporated into other buildings in the future. Many of the materials will be recycled as the building is demolished today, the first step toward Gillespie Group's Marketplace.
"The old City Market building has played a key role in the shaping of the Lansing community, and we want to make sure it is recognized and remembered. The Market's door sets will be proudly displayed as part of Marketplace's design," said Pat Gillespie, president of Gillespie Group.
In addition to the door sets at the east and west sides of the building, a portion of the bricks from the old City Market will be set aside for use in a tribute to the building's history. As much as possible, other elements of the building will be recycled, including metal in steel beams, copper wiring and more, and other materials including bricks and concrete.
The new City Market continues to thrive in its new riverside location, just west of its former home. Vendors settled into the new City Market in February, and an official grand opening celebration is taking place on April 24.
Gillespie Group's Marketplace will be a phased mixed-use development, with the first building consisting of approximately 88 riverfront residential apartment units. Future buildings on the site could include additional residential, office, retail, commercial and entertainment uses. Construction for the first building is planned to begin in late 2010 or early 2011. The development will continue to keep the momentum moving toward Gillespie's vision of a growing, thriving Lansing riverfront.
The Gillespie Group is an East Lansing-based developer dedicated to building an even stronger Greater Lansing. It specializes in fostering urban developments, such as the Stadium District. For more information about the Gillespie Group, please visit www.gillespie-group.com.
